Product-Led Content: The Secret to Creating Content That's Both Useful and Sales-Driven

Have you ever felt like you're writing a blog like an encyclopedia? The content is great, the traffic is high, but very few people actually become customers. I was in that situation when I first started my agency. My blog was full of detailed guides and professional tips – but the leads were meager. Where was the mistake? That's when I realized the power of product-led content.

What is Product-Led Content?

Simply put, product-led content is content designed to help readers solve a problem by using your product. It's not a lengthy advertisement, but a subtle combination of valuable information and practical solutions.

For example, Hotjar has an article about Customer Effort Score (CES). They explain what CES is, how it differs from NPS and CSAT, and then show how to measure NPS using their own tool – complete with clear screenshots. Readers gain useful knowledge and immediately see how Hotjar can help them. That's true product-led content.

Why is Product-Led Content Important?

Imagine you're looking for ways to measure customer satisfaction. You type it into Google and find Hotjar's article. After reading it, you start associating Hotjar with NPS. The next time you need an NPS measurement tool, you'll immediately think of them. That's how brand awareness is built naturally.

Not only that, but product-led content also helps you attract SQLs (Sales Qualified Leads). People who read your articles already have a need – they pre-qualify themselves. This is the opposite of my old strategy, where newsletter subscribers didn't know what I sold, and I even had competitors.

Finally, this content also helps you retain existing customers. If your product has many features, product-led content will guide them to utilize it to its fullest, reducing the risk of them switching to competitors.

How to Create Effective Product-Led Content

This strategy isn't suitable for everyone. I find it particularly effective for SaaS, B2B technology, and digital marketing. But no matter your field, start with these steps:

1. Identify Customer Pain Points

You've already done this when developing your product, but now dig deeper. Suppose your product helps save time. Ask: What is that time being lost to? Can it be broken down into specific activities?

For example, my agency uses Sendible to schedule social media posts. Specific pain points include: having to switch between platforms, wasting time on reporting, and lacking content ideas. Each of these pain points can become a product-led topic.

2. Choose Topics Your Product Truly Solves

Don't try to force your product into unrelated topics. If you sell content writing services, don't write a 2000-word article about backlinks – even if you know a lot – because it's not directly related to your service. Instead, write about how SEO content helps increase natural backlinks, and mention your service as a solution.

3. Target Low-Hanging Fruit

These are long-tail keywords with low search volume. They are easier to rank for and easier to connect with your product. Don't forget SEO optimization – it's the best way to attract new customers. Even if you only want to retain existing customers, SEO still helps increase brand recognition.

Conclusion: Don't Forget Informational Value

It's easy to fall into the trap of turning content into advertising. Remember: product-led content is product-led, not product-centric. The primary goal is still to answer the reader's questions and address their pain points. Your product is just one part of the solution.
