Google Ads API v26: Search Lift and the New Era of Measurement for Marketers

Have you ever wondered whether your ads are genuinely generating new demand, or simply skimming the cream off customers who already intended to search? That seemingly simple question is the trickiest puzzle every marketer has wrestled with throughout their career.

For years, we have been accustomed to measuring ad performance through metrics like clicks, impressions, and conversions. But all those numbers tell only half the story. They do not tell you whether your ad actually caused someone to search for your brand for the very first time, or just claimed credit for searches that were already bound to happen anyway.

And then, on October 14, 2026, Google officially released Google Ads API v26—an update rated by industry experts as a turning point in how we measure ad effectiveness. With the arrival of Search Lift, for the first time advertisers can answer the question: "Did my ad generate additional searches, or did it just capture existing ones?"

Join me, SilverZ, with 20 years of witnessing how many times Google "changes the shirt" of its APIs, as we dissect this update from its roots. Because if you are doing Google Advertising, this is not news you can afford to ignore.

Search Lift: When Advertising Truly Generates Demand

Let's start with the most anticipated feature of Google Ads API v26: Search Lift measurement. This is not just a new metric. It is a new way of thinking about ad performance.

Previously, when you ran ads and saw brand search volume rise, you could not know for sure whether that growth came from the ads. Customers might have known about you beforehand, or industry-wide search trends might have been driving it. Search Lift completely changes that game.

With Search Lift measurement, you can directly access Search Lift studies via the API, including 15 new metrics measuring incremental search volume, relative lift, and impressions. Specifically, you can query the new SearchLiftKeywordBundle resource—a read-only resource allowing you to segment by segments.search_lift_keyword_bundle and segments.search_property.

The three most important metrics among the 15 new ones include:

  • relative_search_lift – the relative increase in brand searches after ad exposure.
  • normalized_incremental_searches – the normalized incremental search volume.
  • search_lift_impressions – the number of ad impressions contributing to incremental searches.

These metrics let you analyze ad performance not only at the click level but also at the level of impact on user search behavior. You can find out whether your ads are truly creating new demand or merely reaching people who already intended to buy.

Local Services Performance Max: Local Advertising Reaches New Heights

Google Ads API v26 Search Lift and new measurement era for marketers

One of the most practical features of Google Ads API v26 is the ability to create Local Services Performance Max campaigns via the API. This is especially vital for local service businesses—those handling repair, cleaning, home care, and countless other trades serving customers in specific areas.

Previously, setting up Local Services Performance Max campaigns required manual execution through the Google Ads interface. With v26, developers can create these campaigns through the API by configuring PmaxCampaignSettings.local_services_enabled alongside the country_code and listing_id from the Google Business Profile.

There is one extremely critical point anyone working with this feature must remember: Local Services Performance Max settings must be specified right when creating the campaign and cannot be changed afterward. This means you must think carefully before creating the campaign, as mistakes cannot be edited later.

Additionally, v26 adds support for linking leads to campaigns, coupon lead types, and message lead conversions—features that make managing local service campaigns more comprehensive than ever.

Simplifying EU Political Advertising Declarations: Reducing Administrative Burdens

Another change awaited by many international advertisers is the simplification of EU political advertising declarations. Previously, any campaign potentially targeting EU users had to provide political ad declarations regardless of the campaign's actual objective.

With Google Ads API v26, Demand Gen campaigns and ad groups targeting exclusively non-EU locations may no longer need to provide political ad declarations, provided they meet Google's criteria. You can check whether a declaration is required by using the new require_eu_political_advertising_declaration field on GeoTargetConstant, CampaignCriterion, and AdGroupCriterion.

This is a small change with a large impact. It helps ease administrative burdens for advertisers who do not operate in the political sphere but were inadvertently caught by strict EU regulations.

Enhanced Conversions: Unified Account-Level Configuration

Another noteworthy feature in v26 is the ability to configure enhanced conversions at the account level. Previously, setting up enhanced conversions required configuring each conversion action individually. With v26, Google provides a unified way to access account-level enhanced conversion settings, making management simpler and more consistent.

This is especially crucial amidst tightening privacy regulations. As third-party cookies gradually disappear, accurate conversion measurement has become tougher than ever. Enhanced conversions let you send hashed customer data (like email or phone numbers) to improve conversion measurement accuracy while preserving privacy.

Other Notable Changes in v26

Beyond the main features mentioned above, Google Ads API v26 brings several other important improvements:

  • Vertical-agnostic travel bid modifiers: Google has standardized hotel-specific bid adjustment fields so they can be used across all travel verticals. Fields such as hotel_date_selection_type, hotel_advance_booking_window, and hotel_length_of_stay have been renamed to user_set_dates, advance_booking_window, and length_of_booking to reflect broader application.
  • Expanded listing type support for Shopping campaigns: Shopping campaigns can now utilize more listing types, opening up broader choices for e-commerce advertisers.
  • Daily minimum budget info for Demand Gen: Information on daily minimum budgets for Demand Gen campaigns is now available based on currency type, helping advertisers plan budgets more accurately. Previously, Google applied a $5/day minimum budget requirement to all Demand Gen campaigns starting April 1, 2026.

New Release Schedule: Twice a Month – Faster, But Also More Challenging

One of the most strategic changes in Google Ads API v26 lies not in any specific feature, but in its release schedule.

Starting with v26, Google is shifting to a bi-monthly (twice a month) release schedule instead of monthly as before. This means developers, automated agents, and advertising pipelines will get earlier access to new features. October 2026 sees the launch of v26, followed by v26.1.

However, benefits come with challenges. More frequent releases mean developers must update client libraries and source code more often. Release announcements and live guides will be published twice per quarter, while individual updates will be documented in API release notes.

For teams with limited resources, keeping up with this faster release cadence can be tough. But for those who can adapt, it is an opportunity to access new features ahead of competitors.

Why This Update Matters to Vietnamese Marketers

You might be thinking: "I am a marketer in Vietnam, how do these API changes affect me?"

The answer is: a lot.

First, Search Lift opens up an entirely new way to measure ad performance. If you are running Google ads for a Vietnamese brand, you can use Search Lift to find out whether your ads genuinely create brand search demand. This is especially vital in fierce markets like Vietnam, where building brand recognition is survival.

Second, Local Services Performance Max is an opportunity for local service businesses. In Vietnam, thousands of small and medium enterprises operate in local services—from appliance repair and house cleaning to at-home healthcare. With the ability to create Local Services Performance Max campaigns via API, agencies and developers can build automation solutions for these businesses, helping them reach customers more effectively.

Third, simplifying EU political advertising declarations might not directly impact Vietnamese marketers, but it shows Google's trend toward reducing administrative burdens. This is a positive signal for all advertisers, showing that Google listens to community feedback and seeks to simplify complex processes.

Fourth, the twice-a-month release schedule is a reminder that digital advertising is changing faster and faster. If you do not proactively update your knowledge and skills, you will soon be left behind. This is not a threat, but a wake-up call for all of us.

When Measurement Is More Than Just Numbers

I have witnessed the digital advertising industry go through quite a few revolutions over the past two decades. From days when we could only measure clicks and impressions, to the era of multi-channel attribution, and onward to the age of AI and machine learning. Every step forward brings new opportunities and challenges.

Google Ads API v26 represents a major step forward in how we understand ad performance. Search Lift is not just a new metric. It is a new mindset regarding the role of advertising in generating demand, rather than merely fulfilling existing demand. That is the difference between becoming a market leader and chasing the market.

And in a world where consumers are increasingly smart and demanding, understanding the true impact of advertising is no longer a competitive advantage. It is a prerequisite for survival.

Have you ever wondered whether your ads are genuinely generating new demand or just capturing customers who already intended to buy? If you had the chance to use Search Lift to answer that question, how would you change your ad strategy? And more importantly, are you ready to adapt to the accelerating pace of Google Ads API changes—or are you waiting for a better excuse to start?
