Google Opens AI Checkout for Shopify: The Era of In-Conversation Shopping

Have you ever thought that one day, customers would buy your products without setting foot on a website, without adding items to a cart, and without even leaving a conversation with an AI? It sounds like science fiction, but that is precisely what is happening right now.

Google has just officially expanded native AI checkout for eligible Shopify merchants, marking a major turning point in how consumers interact with e-commerce. This is no longer an experiment in a laboratory. This is a revolution unfolding on the real-world stage.

Join me, SilverZ, having witnessed countless "technology tsunamis" arrive and sweep away those who were slow to adapt over the past 20 years, in analyzing this event from its roots.

What is Google AI Checkout and how does it work?

Imagine you are chatting with Gemini or using AI Mode in Google Search. You ask: "Find me a lightweight waterproof jacket under $200 that delivers this week." Instantly, the AI not only suggests the most suitable product but also allows you to complete the transaction right within that conversation. No need to open a new tab, no need to fill out payment forms, and no need to wait for a webpage to load.

That is native AI checkout. And for Shopify merchants, this is becoming a reality.

The purchasing process unfolds as follows: customers browse products, add them to the cart, fill in shipping and payment details – all directly inside the AI interface. The order is then synced back to the Shopify Admin within about 30 minutes, and merchants manage everything from pricing and inventory to fulfillment through their existing backend system.

What is remarkable is that customers can complete transactions without ever visiting your website. No product pages, no shopping carts, and no multi-step checkout processes to abandon.

Universal Commerce Protocol: The common language of the AI commerce era

Behind Google AI Checkout lies something even more important than the checkout feature itself: the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) – an open standard co-developed by Google and Shopify. Since its initial debut at NRF 2026, UCP has secured participation from over 20 major retailers and platforms, including payment networks like Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, American Express, and PayPal.

UCP acts as a \"common language\" for AI agents, allowing them to connect and transact with any merchant without requiring custom integrations for each individual platform. It supports all critical steps of the checkout process: applying discount codes, validating loyalty programs, selecting recurring payment terms, and confirming sales conditions such as pre-orders or final sales.

This means merchants no longer have to struggle with building separate integrations for every single AI platform. Set it up once, and your brand can be present everywhere AI happens.

From the US to Canada and Australia: Expansion scope and participation requirements

Initial testing for the native AI checkout feature began with eligible retailers in the US. Currently, Google is expanding to Canada and Australia, with the United Kingdom next on the list.

So what are the requirements to become an eligible merchant? First, your store must be based in the US, Canada, or Australia and sell to customers in those markets. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, the store is required to be headquartered in a supported country, rather than simply selling to customers there.

More importantly, merchants need to be set up with the Shopify Catalog – a specialized product data system built by Shopify so that AI can understand and process it. If you are not in the initial merchant group, do not worry. This is merely the early stage of a long-term expansion process.

Key Milestone: Pioneer brands and real-world impact

Not everyone has the opportunity to test this feature right from the start. Brands like Monos, Gymshark, and Everlane are among the first to participate in direct selling across Google's AI surfaces. Meanwhile, merchants like Keen, Pura Vida, and Kyte Baby have utilized Microsoft's Copilot Checkout to reach customers in entirely new ways.

For these fortunate merchants, the results are incredible. Victor Tam, CEO and co-founder of Monos, shares: \"At Monos, we are thrilled about agentic shopping because it allows us to meet customers where they already are. This is a fresh way for our storytelling and product details to surface right when someone is asking real questions with real intent, in a format that feels helpful and non-intrusive.\"

That is the core takeaway: AI is not just a new sales channel. It is a moment of intersection between need and solution, where customers no longer have to actively search because your products appear right when they need them most.

Competitive landscape: The AI commerce race is heating up

Pinterest is not the only platform boosting performance ad products. Peacock rolled out multiple performance ad tools at NewFronts in March, including Outcomes+, a targeting and measurement tool for CTV. Amazon also upgraded its Brand+ ad product in July with audience signals to drive performance.

And of course, Meta cannot be left unmentioned – continuing heavy investments in AI models for advertising to connect ads with users. The AI race in advertising is heating up rapidly, and Google is showing that it has no intention of being left behind.

Google's differentiator lies in its massive product ecosystem, spanning Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. When Google rolls out agentic commerce, they are not just changing a single channel – they are altering how the entire ecosystem operates.

Lessons for Vietnamese merchants: Prepare starting today

Even though the native AI checkout feature has not yet launched in Vietnam, what is happening in the US, Canada, and Australia serves as an early warning that every merchant needs to heed.

1. Product data will be the new competitive \"weapon\"

In the world of agentic commerce, AI agents do not read your product pages like humans do. They analyze structured data – attributes, inventory, pricing, delivery times, reviews. If your data is missing or inconsistent, your products will remain invisible to AI agents, even if they perfectly match customer needs.

Start standardizing your product data today. Ensure every information field – from sizing, materials, and care instructions to technical attributes – is complete and accurate. A single missing data field can get an entire product combination excluded from AI recommendations.

2. Build a strong brand for AI recognition

When AI makes recommendations, it does not rely solely on product data. It depends on brand reputation – what communities say about you, customer reviews, and your presence across reputable platforms. AI agents will prioritize recommending brands they \"trust\" based on signals across the entire ecosystem.

Invest in building your brand not only on your website but across every platform that AI can \"read\": from review sites and social networks to professional articles and forums.

3. Prepare for shifts in shopping behavior

Consumers are increasingly accustomed to asking AI instead of typing keywords into search boxes. They describe their requirements thoroughly and expect AI to deliver complete solutions. This means traditional SEO strategies will gradually become obsolete, replaced by optimizing product data for agentic commerce.

4. Do not overlook other AI channels

Google is not the only platform. Shopify has also integrated with ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and will expand to numerous other platforms. Vietnamese merchants need to closely monitor the development of all these channels to avoid missing out.

5. Leverage the advantage of latecomers

The fact that the feature has not launched in Vietnam yet is not a disadvantage. It is an opportunity to observe, learn from the mistakes of pioneers, and prepare thoroughly before the wave arrives. Use this time to build a solid data foundation and a long-term brand strategy.

When shopping is no longer a journey, but a moment

I have watched the e-commerce industry undergo significant transformations over the past two decades. From the days when websites were merely static product catalogs to the era of smart shopping carts and personalization. Yet, I have never witnessed a change as foundational as this.

Google AI Checkout is more than just a new feature. It is a declaration of the future: a future where shopping becomes a moment within a conversation, no longer a multi-step journey. A place where AI agents make decisions on behalf of customers, and the winning brand is the one the AI \"understands\" and \"trusts\" the most.

And like every other technological revolution, the winner is not the strongest, but the one who adapts the fastest. The question is no longer \"Will this happen in Vietnam?\", but rather \"Will you be the leader or the one left behind?\"

What do you think about the prospect of customers purchasing products right within a conversation with AI without visiting your website? Is it a golden opportunity to reach customers precisely when they need you most, or a threat as you lose control over the brand experience? If you are an online store owner in Vietnam, what will you prepare right now so you do not get left behind in the agentic commerce era? Share your perspective below, because in this game, silence means yielding the field to your competitors!
